Maracas, Palo Cruzado Joropo

The shell is made from the totumo gourd (which grows on the prairies of Columbia and Venezuela), and they are filled with capacho seeds. These features, combined with the fact that the butternut-wood handle goes all the way through the gourd, gives the maracas their characteristic sound.
